Rare stuff indeed. This was distilled at Mannochmore from 1996 to '97. This 10 year old is known as "The Black Whisky", so named for its very dark appearance. The producers attribute the colour to the use of double charred casks. Perhaps there's a drop or two of spirit caramel in the equation. Regardless, this is quite a collectible, even if it's not particularly well-regarded by critics. Bottled at 40%ABV. 1 Liter.
Nose: Charcoal smoke, burnt toast, damp earth, light rubber and medicinal notes, with a subtle sweetness underneath.
Palate: Dry and smoky with strong charcoal bitterness, ash, roasted coffee beans, dark chocolate, and a slightly oily mouthfeel.
Finish: Medium length, very dry and ashy, with lingering burnt wood, smoke, and a faint herbal bitterness.
