Muratie Ben Prins Cape Vintage 2009 – 750ml is a mature South African fortified red wine from historic Muratie Wine Estate in Stellenbosch, produced in the traditional Cape Vintage style and named in honour of legendary Muratie winemaker Ben Prins, known as “Barefoot Ben.”
The 2009 vintage was produced as a field blend of traditional Portuguese varieties – Tinta Barocca, Tinta Roriz, Tinta Francisca and Souzão – grown together in Muratie’s old vineyard. The grapes were hand harvested together, fermented in traditional open concrete fermenters and fortified with grape spirit before maturation. Muratie
The wine then matured for a minimum of two years in old 225-litre French oak barrels before bottling. Muratie described the 2009 as having excellent ageing potential, with its combination of concentrated dark fruit, floral aromatics, chocolate, spice and structured tannins. wine.co.za
Now well over a decade beyond release, the 2009 Ben Prins is an appealing mature Cape fortified wine and an interesting bottle for collectors of historic South African wine.
